Smaller Marks Carpentry Training: Session 2

Last week, Dovetail held its second Smaller Marks Carpentry Training, where newer carpenters have the opportunity to learn from our more advanced crew members in a larger group format.

Supporting our teams’ learning and growth while touching on many of Dovetail’s servant-leadership values, these trainings allow everyone to share work, experience, and knowledge in a way that elevates our craft and our craftspeople—engaging our teams company-wide while holding space for education, communication, collaboration, and growth.

Dovetail’s work is exacting – we execute work that is true to client expectations and architects’ design intent with a level of craftsmanship that places a great emphasis on the preparation. Careful and thoughtful planning, set-up, and layout is the foundation of delivering our work at the highest quality.

For this month’s training, Superintendent Matt Lawson was lead instructor, focusing on basic skills needed for good layout. Hands-on training included: using a string line and tying it off properly, snapping a line, using lasers and datum lines, how story sticks increase efficiency and ensure accuracy, how CNC templates add value to complicated layout, methods for checking square, and avoiding common mistakes.

Smaller Marks Carpentry Trainings provide our team with opportunities to develop their full potential and perform as highly as possible. The camaraderie and sharing of experiences also helps each of our team members embody a servant leadership mindset. Because we truly believe – you can lead from anywhere at Dovetail!
